Kilimanjaro Half Marathon

Sunday was the biggest sporting event of the year in Moshi… the Kilimanjaro Marathon! I had never run a race like this before, but who can turn down the opportunity to be in one of the most famous races on the continent? Craig and I opted for the half marathon, and we managed to survive the uphill course. The gorgeous setting certainly helped – the course was set on a winding road leading up to the mountain, surrounded by coffee plantations on either side. By far the most exciting part of the race was when the marathon front-runners, Olympic veterans and the running world’s elite among them, sprinted past us on their way towards Kili. They had already run 21 kilometers before starting the uphill grind, and yet they still flew past us. It was impressive! The race ended in the packed Moshi stadium, with fans cheering us on. We were happy to finish within the first 900, enough to earn a t-shirt and a medal.

The winner was Tanzanian, but... much to the crowd's dismay... the leader in the full marathon was Kenyan
